Weekly Update #5 - Treasure Hunting

Ah, what’s a good ol’ 3D platformer without collectibles, right? Colloquially known as “collectathons”, the early 3D era was the breeding ground of those types of games, that would often involve a mascot running around and jumping on platforms in order to collect a bunch of items. Some of these collectathons even received a lot of praise; Spyro the Dragon comes to mind, from which Seed of Life is heavily inspired.

This week, in addition to the Records system I was mentioning last time, I also implemented Treasures that you can collect as you progress through the levels, in the same vein as the jewels in Spyro. There are sixteen different kinds of treasures of varying rareness, that encourage both skill and exploration. These treasures will also have some practical use in the future, as they will be exchangeable against items and power-ups with specific NPCs. Of course, treasure hunting is completely optional and non-essential.

Here is this week’s changelog:

Content

  • New feature: Records, sometimes during your adventure you will stumble across travel notes that were written by ancient heroes. They will give you some information on the game’s lore.
  • New feature: Treasures, you will be able to collect these treasures during your adventure.
  • New assets: models, textures, and SFX for the treasures.

Work in progress

  • Nothing, I’m all done and on schedule! Ready to tackle the next subject.

Objectives for next week

  • Start the implementation of the status system, that will allow you to inflict status effects to your enemies, and your enemies to inflict status effects to you.
